Everyone packs the same list. Base layers, gloves, a spare buff, sunscreen. Fine, sorted. What actually saves a trip is the stuff nobody thinks to mention, the small gadgets and fixes that live in the back of a local’s car or the bottom of their backpack and only get talked about after something’s gone wrong. None of it is expensive, and none of it is flashy. It’s just the difference between skiing through a problem and sitting out half a day because of one.
A boot dryer that packs down small
Nothing ruins a second day like shoving cold, damp feet into liners that never actually dried overnight. A portable boot dryer is small enough to throw in a ski bag and means you’re not relying on the lodge heater or a radiator that’s already covered in six other people’s gloves. Plug it in before bed, wake up to warm dry boots. Also does gloves, so it earns its space twice over.
A pocket edge tool
Most riders won’t touch a full tuning kit, and that’s fair, but a small tool for a burred edge is a different story. Clip an edge on a rock and keep skiing on it for the rest of the day and it only gets worse. Something like an Express Tuner fits in the backpack and fixes a nick in the time it takes to eat a muesli bar. Cheap insurance against a wrecked run.
Anti-fog, the actual kind
Everyone’s tried breathing wrong into their goggles at the worst possible moment. Spit and a sleeve gets you through one run if you’re lucky. Cat Crap is the old-school fix that’s stuck around because it works, a small tin that’s been in ski patrol pockets for decades. Rub it on the inside of the lens the night before and forget about fogging for the day.
A strap that fixes almost anything
Every mountain local has one of these buried in their pack, and almost nobody buys one until they’ve watched it save someone else’s day. A Voile strap holds skis together for the walk to the car, splints a busted pole, or lashes a boot buckle back on. Duct tape’s stronger, reusable cousin. Once you carry one, you carry it forever.
A tracker for your ski bag
Checked ski bags get lost more often than regular luggage, oddly shaped, easy to misroute, and the airline won’t always tell you where it’s gone. Drop an AirTag into a boot or a jacket pocket inside the bag and you’ll know exactly where it is before the airline does, and can flag it the second it doesn’t show up on the carousel. Genuinely useful the one time a year it matters.
None of these are the gear that gets talked up. They’re small, cheap next to a lift ticket, and the kind of thing you only think to buy after the trip where you needed one and didn’t have it.
