Zeb Powell doesn’t dress like someone building a fashion brand, and that’s basically the whole pitch behind Zeb’s Closet. Burton quietly dropped the teaser on July 15 at a short list of shops across the US and Canada, nothing global yet, just enough to get it into the hands of people already paying attention. If the full range lands worldwide in September the way it’s supposed to, it’ll be one of the more personal pro collections Burton has put out in a while.

Nine pieces make up the drop: a short sleeve tee, a rugby shirt, a reversible insulated vest, jersey shorts, a long sleeve jersey shirt, baggy 2L cargo pants, simple 2L pants, a baggy tee, and a reversible bucket hat. None of it reads like it was built around a logo placement meeting. Burton’s own line is that it’s “an extension of his world,” pulling from his life experience and vintage influences, and for once the marketing copy actually holds up. Zeb rides like someone who grew up on a skateboard more than he grew up on a race course, and the clothes look like it too, loose through the shoulders, built for moving rather than standing still for a photo.

Nobody outside Burton knows whether Zeb had a hand in every stitch or whether the range was built around his taste and signed off after the fact. Either way, it’s a bet that his audience wants to dress like him more than they want another logo tee stitched with his name, and it’s a fair bet. Zeb’s one of the only riders whose off-snow style gets talked about almost as much as his riding does, which says something about how far snowboarding’s actually drifted from the podium-first era Burton built its name on.

For now, the collection is only sitting on shelves at a handful of stores. East coast, that’s Stratton in Vermont, Alpine Ski Shop in Virginia, Recess in North Carolina, and a run of Midwest boardshops including Zombie in Minnesota and Central in Wisconsin. West coast, it’s Board of Provo in Utah, the Vail retail location in Colorado, and Radio in Aspen. Canada gets The Source in Calgary and Edmonton, plus Empire’s Quebec stores. None of that is much use to anyone reading this mid-season here, but the September global release is worth circling if Zeb’s your rider.

Whether Zeb’s Closet holds up once it’s not riding the mystique of a teaser drop is the actual test. Plenty of pro collections look sharper in the launch reel than they do six months later, half-priced on a clearance rack. This one has a better shot than most, mostly because it doesn’t look like it’s trying that hard, and with Zeb, that’s usually the point.
